Welcome Bach to School!
Welcome back, Robeson students and families! It has been great to see everyone in these first few days. For Music in the Morning, we’re starting with a “Welcome Bach”…Johann Sebastian Bach. Each morning we listen to a piece of music over the intercom as we begin our day. Each week we will focus on a different piece of music and its composer. Listen for these pieces this month:
August 23-27: Prelude from Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, performed by Yo-Yo Ma
August 30-September 4: Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Allegro
September 7-10: Sarabande from Partita in A Minor
September 13-17: Two-part Invention in A Major
Family Arts Night 2010
Thursday, April 29
6:00-7:45
Join us for a great evening of arts at Robeson! Many guest artists from the community have volunteered to share their art in our classrooms. Families are invited to enjoy displays of student artwork and musical performances.
Fourth grade students will present a mini-musical, The Cat and the Rat, based on a Jamaican folk tale. They are singing, playing instruments, moving, acting, and making some of their own instruments and props. A Tepper grant provided the art materials and a new steel drum! We hope to see you all there!
Wayne Thiebaud cake decorator

In Art class we have been learning about the artist Wayne Thiebaud (say it like Tee-bow). He makes delicious looking still lifes of cakes, pies and yummy treats, but his are all made with paint! Here is a website where you can decorate your own Wayne Thiebaud cakes!
3rd and 2nd grades compose!
A few weeks ago, Robeson 2nd and 3rd graders learned about form in music. Specifically, they learned about the form ABACA, or “rondo.” Each class created a class composition on this form. Those pieces are attached below. They also listened and analyzed some fun pieces created on garage band. Those pieces are also attached!
If you would like to compose music on your own, here are a few websites to help!
Interactive Still life
In Art class we have been learning about the artist Paul Cezanne and still life painting. The National Gallery of Art has a wonderful website with an interactive still life maker. Check it out here!
A Conversation With Harriet Tubman
5th Grade Music Program:
A Conversation With Harriet Tubman
Written by Dr. Renee Boyer-Alexander
5th Grade students will perform African American spirituals and share about the life of Harriet Tubman on Thursday, February 18 at 6:30. Students have enjoyed singing and playing Orff instruments as we prepare. Families of 5th grade students, please join us for a wonderful evening of music!
Rocky Maffit at Robeson
Robeson recently welcomed Rocky Maffit, percussionist, for an all-school assembly. We listened and moved to rhythms he played on the djembe, ocean drum, talking drum, and angklungs. We clapped, snapped, sang, and remembered that we are instruments, too!
Many thanks to our PTA and the Tepper family for funding this assembly!
Drum Circle 2009
Mrs. Alves and Mrs. Filkins led two great sessions of Drum Circle Club this fall. Third, fourth, and fifth graders met after school for rhythm, movement, and interaction. And don’t forget the pizza party!
The words from Dave Holland’s game in the book Drumagination remind us what drum circle is all about:
“Jump on in”–Give it a try! We make a safe space for everyone.
“Slide to the groove”–We play with rhythms.
“Don’t forget to breathe”–Playing music is relaxing and enjoyable.
“Make a connection”–We are part of a community.
